Averages W7 T4
This past week I have been going outside and shooting hoops to find the average of my shooting. The first day I got 4/10 Tuesday I got 6/10 Wednesday I got 4/10 Thursday I got 6/10 and Friday I got 7/10. I think that it was good because I improved by the time it got to Friday. My average in the end was 5.2 and I was shooting from 2.12 meters away from the hoop. Here is our video that we made.
Reflection W6 T4
This week my Numeracy group has been focusing on ratios we had to make a fruit kebab but before we made it we had to make a ratio for how many of the different fruits and marshmallows we were putting on. Here is my google drawing of what my ratio was.

This Term Literacy we are doing an Avail. It is where you watch a movie and then you have to complete. The activity that we done this wee was called Surprise Subtitles. You had to read the sub titles and then Miss Hines would stop the movie and we had to remember the sub title before she paused it so we pretty much had the read the sub titles. the movie we are doing is Ink Heart. Here is my activity.

Grey District Athletics
On Wednesday it was grey district athletics. I got in for everything except discus. When we first got there Mrs Clark gave us instructions about where we are going first.
The year 8 girls went to shot put first. I threw 5.90m and I came 3rd. My first throw was the only throw that counted because the other 2 were no throws. After I had my 3 throws we waited until the hooter went and then we walked over to do the 60m Sprint.
Waiting at the starting line nervously I heard "On your marks, Get set, BOOM. I sprint off. At the end I put of foot over the line in first place! So I came first in that race.
Then We went to have a rest before discus. I didn't do discus. I watched Mackenzie do it.
Then we went to high jump I jumped 1.30m high. I came first again! Then we went to long jump. I jumped 4.00m. Which was the longest jump. Then we had another break until finally Our last race the 100m sprint. I won again with a time of 14.03 seconds!
At the very end we had a relay where the 2 fastest girls and 2 fastest boys from each age group and from each school race 100m each around ANZAC park. We came 1st in the relay as well.
That was my day! I loved athletics and I cant wait for West Coast Next Wednesday! I got in for everything I done!

Numeracy T4 W3
This week we have been learning about the different types of triangles. I have learnt that a Scalene has all different angles, an Isosceles has 2 angles the same size and 1 different, and an equilateral has all the same size sides. We also did some Maths Buddy tasks about angles and I got 10/10 in all 4 of them. I liked learning about triangles because it was really easy to pick up. Here are some pictures of the different types of triangles.

Narrative Horror Writing T4 W3
This week since it was Halloween on Wednesday, our class got to do Horror Narrative Writing . I liked writing mine and I thought it was fun. For Narrative Writing you need to have good detail and descriptive words to pull the reader in! Here is my Writing.
CREEEKKKK…
As I am walking across the slippery lino, the floorboards are creaking like an old man's bones cracking as he gets up out of his seat. Then, I hear a loud bang in the back of the abandoned house. My heart is beating faster than a cheetah can run. I run out the back door and find myself in a cemetery. All of the gravestones are covered in spider webs.
To my surprise a ghost rises from one of the graves and whispers- “Go to the piano inside OR ELSE!” For a split second I thought I was just tripping out but then it came up again and yelled “YOU WILL FLOAT TOO!!!” That was when my bones almost jumped out of my skin in fear that if I didn't go to this piano he is talking about I will float for the rest of eternity just like him…
After he goes back down into his grave, a light breeze hits me. I decide that I should go back into the abandoned house and find this piano. I open the back door… SQUWEEEKKK, just like a mouse.
I go in and see a shadow move. Its big. It's scary. I keep walking and I feel like someone or something is following me. The thought of walking around this damp empty house trying to find a piano, gives me the shivers. Still walking down a rather large hallway I spot a door at the end.
Should I open it? That door will be way too small to fit a piano in it anyways. I hear music softly playing, I go up the old creaky stairs, Just waiting for something to jump out at me and grab me. The ghost that I saw earlier comes out of the stairs and says “1 Hour, Just remember, YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!” Blood Started OOOZING out of his mouth as he disappears into thin air.
I Finally find the piano up stairs, It's playing music, it sounds really scary like its trying to tell me something. I can hear my heavy breathing louder then I could before. Well I found the piano so does this mean that I can go? Am I free? Of Course, “Again out of nowhere the ghost comes up and says listen to the piano to find your next clue time is ticking.”
I say “I don't want to play anymore please please please!” But he doesn't reply he is gone. This is a silly game I don't like it! How do I get out of it? Suddenly the piano stops. Everything is quiet. Its DEAD silent.
The Possessed Ghost comes out of nowhere and starts attacking me, Beating, Biting, Strangling me… I must of run out of time. My blood flow has stopped, I think I’m dead but I'm not certain.
I Can't Fight Back…

Country Study
This Week we have started a topic project called country study. Miss Hines found a generator that comes up with a random country and then thats the country that we had to do our country study on. I got Zimbabwe, I have put all of my information on a document and then I am printing it out and putting it on a poster. I haven't finished yet but I am almost done, all I need to do is print my information out and stick it on my poster. We have questions that we have to answer about our country. Here are some pictures of Zimbabwe.

Reflection W1 T4
This week Miss Power gave us the task of researching the life cycle of a butterfly and then writing a piece of work about how the life cycle goes. Kaede and I write this piece of writing.
The Life cycle of a butterfly all starts with a tiny egg the size of a pinhead. We are going to talk to you about the stages that a butterfly goes through to get to be such a beautiful creature.
Did you know it takes 3-5 days for the butterfly eggs to hatch? The eggs are usually laid in a protected area, or near plants that caterpillars feed on. Otherwise its to hard for the little creatures to find food. Most eggs are attached to a plant with a type of fast drying chemical glue that the female butterfly produces along with the egg.
Once the egg hatches, a caterpillar comes to life! Caterpillars only have 3 body parts the head, thorax and the abdomen and 2 antennas on their head. Caterpillars eat constantly so they grow to be very big. The caterpillars predators are Birds, human beings, ladybird beetles and yellow jackets are a threat to caterpillars.
Once the caterpillar is ready to start its journey to become a butterfly, it stops eating and hangs upside-down and starts to form a chrysalis. The caterpillar is in the chrysalis for 10-14 days. If the chrysalis falls the caterpillar is not likely to survive because of the drop.
Finally the butterfly is almost ready to spread its wings! It takes the butterfly about 2-3 hours after it comes out of the chrysalis to be able to fly. First it has to stretch and dry out its wings. Butterflies don't have mouths , instead they have a long straw-like body part that they use to drink nectar or other liquids. It is called a proboscis. Since they don't have mouths butterflies have tiny taste sensors on their feet.
The caterpillar is finally finished its journey of becoming a butterfly!

Kapa Haka Festival
On Thursday this week The Grey Main School Kapa Haka group will be performing at the Kapa Haka festival in Hokitika!
We have been training very hard and Whaea Paula has been working on getting our transitions perfect before we go to the festival. So far we are looking pretty good.
Whaea Katie has also been working very hard to get us all sorted, also on our uniforms. I have been to 4 festivals so far and this one will be my 5th. We will be competing against other schools in the grey district. There are a lot of trophies that you can win at the festival including Maanakitanga, Ki Ta Taki Tane, Ki Ta Taki Wahine and 1st 2nd and 3rd overall, also much more.
Last year Grey Main got 2 Trophy's. I cant remember what they were but we done really well.
I am exited and nervous about the festival!

Prep 2018
During the next 2 weeks our whole school will be doing something called prep. Prep is where you have pretend ventures and you have pretend money and you have to come up with something crafty to make and sell your products at the markets that we have. You can also apply for jobs like- Banker, Police, Advertising Agency, Warehouse and more. Cleo Summer and I are making Wood Art. We are gonna sell our products for $15 at the mini market and if they sell to quick we will knock the price up to 20-25 at big market. We made a slide show about how to make the wood art and what we will need, also some ideas we can use! Here is our slide!

ASB Netball Challenge!
This week on Monday our ASB Netball team went to Westport to play the top Buller and Hoki Teams. We played Saint Marys and Westport South. We won both of our games by a reasonable amount! To get to go to Westport we had to play a tournament here in Greymouth against all of the local schools. We won all of our games. I really enjoyed going to Westport to play! When we got to Westport we got changed, after that we went and warmed up for our first game against Buller. After that game we had a short break to eat. Then we played another game against Saint Marys. We got a trophy at the end for winning the ASB Challenge and I hope next year Grey Main wins again!

W8 T3 Reflection
This week for writing we have been refocusing on argument writing we had to argue about why we think recycling is essential. I enjoyed writing my argument and it was also really interesting! Here is my work!
Recycling Is Essential
I Strongly Believe that recycling is essential! Many marine life animals are mistaking plastic bags or other rubbish for prey and then dying. Over 1 million animals per year are dying from ingesting plastic and having it in there system or even choking! We are breathing in the chemicals of plastic everyday because of people dumping rubbish in silly places. Also it takes 10-1000 years for plastic to decompose!
Do you ever think about how many animals die a year from eating plastic? Well over 1 million marine life animals actually dies a year from eating plastic! One Green Planet has told us that “Sea turtles are the most common animals that die from eating plastic per year. The other most common animals are Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Birds, Whales and Dolphins”. I find it very sad that innocent animals are dying every year from plastic that people have thrown in the sea!
Us Humans are breathing in the toxic chemicals from the plastic and that can not be good for our systems! BPA is a very toxic chemical in plastic. Scientists have found that BPA is in the plastic bottles that some people drink out of! BPA affects the brain and heart. Have you thought about having a drink bottle that either BPA free of made of stainless steel?
Do you know how many years it takes for plastic to break down? 10-1000 years! The plastic that is put in landfills takes that long to go away! Just remember every piece of rubbish you drop will be there for your kids life and their kids life and their kids life and so on! If we don’t start recycling now our whole world will turn into a dump!
Have you ever thought of using reusable bags for your shopping or bringing a lunch box to school instead of a plastic bag, all of these things will help save our environment!
Those 3 reasons are why I believe that recycling is essential! Do you think that? If you dont then I hope I made you change your mind!

Marae Visit
On Tuesday the 21st of August my class (T3) went to the Arahura Marae. When we first got there we had to grab our buddies and line up under a little shelter. We had to be karanga onto the marae witch means welcomed.
Once we got to the Marae we had to take our shoes off and sit down on the seats provided. Then Matua T said a long speech in Te reo about the marae and its background.
After that we sang a song because its polite to sing after someone has given a speech. Then we all stood up and gave the people that own the marae a hongi. A hongi is like a greeting and it is when your touch noses. It is so that you share the same breathe of air.
After the welcoming was done we went out into the Whare Kai and washed our hands. Before we went into the eating place Matua T said a Karakia to bless the food. Then we went into the eating house and we were aloud 1 savory 1 piece of cake and 1 piece of apple.
After we were all finished eating we went back into the meeting place and sat in a circle to do our mihis. After everyone had said their mihis Matua T told us about what all of the carvings on the walls meant. He also told us about the parts of the Wharenui. I already knew about the parts of the Whare because we learnt about that last year.
After that we went outside and Matua told us a little bit more about the history of the Marae, and then we sang another song. Will and Sam then said Thank-you to Matua T for having us and letting us explore the Whare.
Then we left. I had an amazing time at the Marae. I think its really cool because that is my Marae and the people that were there are all probably related to me in some way. Also Matua T talked about another marae in Bruce Bay that is also my Marae.
I had an amazing time at the whare and I cant wait to go back and see it all again!

This week Kaede Mya Mackenzie and I, have been working on getting an old stall that was made by older students that no longer go to out school out and repainting it. At the moment we have only cleaned it and got it ready to paint. We are going to sell vegetables, fruits and plants at it. We will put it out the front of the school and have an honesty box for people to pay for what they want. Next week we will start to paint it!

W3 T3 Reflection Writing
This week for Literacy we have been working on Arguments and using topic sentences to start each paragraph. I also wrote a piece of descriptive writing. Me and Kaede did an argument about why we dont think animals should be in circuses. Here is my work.
Would you like to be trapped in a cage having to practice acts all day everyday. Well we know that we definitely wouldn't.
What do you think?
By Ella and Kaede
Wandering through the graveyard, it felt like something was watching me. I ran away from my village. I stopped because of the smell of burning. I looked blurry eyed around nothing was there except 2 headstones. Gale Ropper and Michael Ropper.
Staring at the headstones, my brain was spinning in circles as I was wondering how I know those names. I mean 2 headstones in a graveyard? I wonder why there is only 2? I got over the thought that I knew them, that is silly.
A shrill cry echoed in the misty air, my heart dropped, my eyes almost popped out of my head. Was that the person? Is there really someone watching me? I walked and I could hear footprints behind me. I pulled a knife out of my pocket and turned around sharply. No one was there...
Would you like to be trapped in a cage having to practice acts all day everyday. Well we know that we definitely wouldn't.
We think that animals should not have to be abused for human entertainment. The animals are living a sad and lonely life and should be out there enjoying the world instead of being stuck inside and not being in there natural habitat. We`re going to tell you 3 reasons why we think animals should not be in circuses.
Would you like to be abused and carried around for your whole live? Well the animals that act in circuses are not treated very nicely. They have been taken from their homes to act in circuses for human entertainment. The circus instructors use whips, tight collars, muzzles and electric prods to make the animals do as they are told witch is an abusive way to control animals.
The animals are living a lonely and sad life, what if that was you? They are chained up and not feed properly and are forced to do things they don't want to do. They are not living a usual life and they will probably die earlier in life then other animals because of being overworked and always being exhausted.
What If you weren't with other humans and you were always with animals instead of people like you. Well these animals aren't in there natural habitat and are forced to live in cages instead. I think it's very unfair and wrong for people to treat animals this way.
Those 3 reasons right there are why we strongly think that animals should not be in circuses.

Reflection W1 T3
Last week were were working on writing an argument. We learnt how to cause cause and effect to grab the readers attention. We had to work with a buddy to write 3 good paragraphs about our topic witch was why we should have a phone. I also wrote a descriptive piece of writing about a picture that I found. Here are me and my friend Kaedes Paragraphs and my writing.
Series of Paragraphs (including topic sentences)
Imagine if we were in separate towns and there was no way to communicate well a phone could solve our problem. It would be really good to be able to keep in contact with my friends and family. Like if I went somewhere with my friends and I needed you to pick me up somewhere I could just text you and tell you where and what time. Also If I wanted to sort something out with my friends I could just use social media as an easy way to communicate with them.
Having a phone will cure my boredom forever! It will cure boredom most of the time Because, If I went somewhere and had to wait in line or wait somewhere I could just play on my phone. Also if I am bored at home and it's a terrible day, I can just play on my phone instead of moaning to you! Plus there will be a lot less arguing in the house if I had a phone.
You would never believe it but some apps on phones are very useful! There are some very helpful apps on phones and I may need to use one of them someday, you never know. If I got lost in the middle of nowhere, I could use the google maps to find my way out. Also if I needed help or someone to come and get me I could call someone close to come find me. Other Helpful apps are the clock, calculator, compass. They are all very useful! Another one is the alarm clock because you won't have to come banging on my door in the morning because the alarm will wake me up early in the morning!

Nervously I walked up to the long moldy and old jetty that looked like it was going to snap, my hairs were starting to stand up over my body. Telling myself I was going to be ok but it wasn't working. I had to do it, I had to jump otherwise my friends will call me a wuss and make fun of me.
I didn't want to do it but I found that my feet were just starting to take me in the direction of the jetty. My feet touched the moss on the side of the jetty and I shivered and jumped. But I kept going anyways. I finally slowly got to the edge of the jetty and my feet dangled over the side.
Standing there I just looked over the smooth water. A fish jumped out of the water like a frog leaping into the sky. I thought to myself I am going to be like that fish i'm going to jump in 3 2 1…
I just can`t! I told myself not to think about it and before I knew it I was in the freezing cold water bobbing up and down like a raft that someone has made. Excitingly I swam my way to the shore my feet touched the nice golden sand. When I got up the sand was all stuck in my toes I hate that feeling.
Running to the jetty I did it all again!

Writing an Exposition/Argument
In writing we have just started laying out a scaffold which is the bare bones of an argument. Today we have been learning about how to show cause and effect, which is an action that leads to a consequence in our argument writing. Here is a word bank that we can use in our writing.
