Term 1 Reading Challenge Post 5

Title- The Better Woman
Author- Ben Carroll
Illustrator- Cathey Kelly
Genre- Sad
Rating- 10/10 so far...
This book is about-

A young girl named Sarah who loves to run just like her Dad who died in a motorbike accident. She ran every day for 30 mins straight in rain hail or shine. Her Grandmother who looks after her gets worried when she runs in the rain as both Sarah's Dad and Sarahs Grandfather died in accidents because of rain.

Sarahs Grandmother doesn't like Sarah getting her shoes wet and muddy because they were her dads but living on a farm the muddy paddocks are the only place that Sarah can run. Everyone is always telling Sarah how amazing she is at running and that one day she will be winning medals just like her father. Although that is really nice Sarah doesn't like it when people talk about her Dad because it makes her wonder a lot of things about him as he died when she was only 3 years old so she doesn't remember him at all!

At the moment I am finding this book really sad but interesting. Sarah and I are kind of alike in a way because we both love to run.

Title- The Longest Whale Song
Author- Jacqueline Wilson
Illustrator- Jacqueline Wilson
Rating- 10/10
Genre- Sad
This book was about- A little girl named Ella and she was just in love with whales. At the start of the book, Ellas Mum got pregnant with what was soon going to be Ella's little brother.

What Ellas Mum didn't know was something went wrong with the pregnancy and the hospital caught it too late which put Ellas Mum into a coma. Which means that Ellas Mum can't eat talk move or do anything and she had to stay in the hospital.

Even the doctors didn't know when she was going to wake up or if she was going to wake up! Ellas Stepdad looked after her for the period of time that her Mum was in the coma and took her to see and talk to her Mum every day.

One of the days Ella told her Mum about how she was doing a project about whales at school and she told her that the humpback whale can sing. Ella put on some whale music which magically made her Mum open her eyes for the first time in 9 months!

I absolutely loved reading this book and brought it because It really looked like a book that I would like and plus the girl's name is Ella which made me want to get it even more as my name is Ella! I recommend this book for everyone the age of 5+.

Title-Finding
Author- David Hill
Rating- 6/10
Genre- Maori/Adventure
This book is about-

A family that lives in a really tiny town who decided it was time to move somewhere that they would enjoy it more. The family loved farming so they decided that New Zealand was the best place to come to.

After they went on a very long boat trip to finally get to NZ they brought a farm and started their own business selling Milk Butter and cheese from the cows. All 3 kids found great friends and they all worked on the farm as well. Their Dad thought that there was some type of treasure in NZ and he wanted to go there just to find what he was looking for.

That is all I have read so far but at the moment I am loving the book! Some parts get really boring that's why I rated it a 6/10 but other then that its a great and interesting book so far! The reason I chose to get this book out is that it's a Maori book and I am a Maori so I thought it would be cool to read a book about my nationality.

Title- Wonder
Author- R.J. Palacio
Illustrator- R.J. Palacio
Rating- 10/10
Review of the book-

The book wonder is about a little boy that was born a deformed face. His Mum decided that he should start going to a normal school instead of being homeschooled. When he starts going to school he gets bullied for what he looks like by lots of kids, but he also finds 2 awesome friends that stick up for him. He actually starts to enjoy school until someone said that he doesn't deserve to be at a school.

He told his Mum that he is never going to school again. His Mum felt really bad for him, but she made him go to school anyway because she knew that he would do much better at a normal school. In the end, he loved school and his friends always stuck up for him.

He went on a school trip at the end of the year for a couple of days and he helped a lot of people. At the end of school presentations, he got an award for the most loyal, strongest kid in the school. Everyone was so proud of him.
